Scaling & Root Planning
Scaling and root planning is a procedure whereby the Periodontist, Dentist or Hygienist cleans the teeth above and below the gum. The deposits and bacteria are removed from the crown or root of the tooth, which then allows the gums to heal. Bleeding gums and inflamed tissues respond to this form of therapy. This is a non-surgical procedure that can also treat Peri-Mucositis, which is an inflammation of gum tissue around implants.
Periodontal pocket elimination is a surgical procedure that allows for the treatment of moderate to advanced forms of periodontal disease. This is achieved by opening or flapping the gum, so that the root can be visualized and all deposits removed from these roots. In most of these cases the gum is then repositioned higher up on the root, so that the pocket is shallow. This is important for long term maintenance. Patients cannot adequately clean pockets that are deeper then 5mm.
Gum resection is needed in order to reduce deep periodontal pockets. These pockets harbor bacteria and deposits that form on the root surface. Resection or repositioning of the gum tissue allows for healing of the gums and bone and reducing the depth of the pockets. By reducing the depth of the pocket, the patient can then maintain these sites on daily basis. This gum resection may be used in conjunction with osseus surgery, bone surgery, where any roughness of the bone is smoothed during this procedure
Implants are placed into the jaw bone. An incision is made into the gum to allow for the implant placement. Three months of healing is usually required for the implant to form a union with the bone. This process is called Osseo Integration. This is followed by a restorative dentist placing the abutments and crowns.
Gum grafting is an additive procedure, which is used to increase the amount of gum around teeth or implants. This includes areas where gums are receding, or when gum is deficient because of the loss of a tooth . It can also be used to cover roots where recession is prevalent. The augmentation of the gum is accomplished by removing gum from one area of the mouth, and sutured to the designated site.
Bone loss around teeth and implants is usually caused by Periodontal Disease or Peri-Implantitis. Bone grafting is utilized to replace missing bone by rebuilding it with bone particles. These bone particles or grafts can be either human, animal, or synthetic bone (made in a lab). The determination of which materials should be used is based on the condition being treated. This procedure is also performed to replace bone lost as a result of tooth extraction.
This is a procedure that is carried out when decay or fractures have occurred below the gum line. A surgical procedure is carried out to reposition the gum above the fracture or decay so that the dentist can restore the teeth to a state of health.
Adjustment procedures are performed when the bite is uneven or causing the teeth to become loose. An uneven bite can also cause tooth ache or pain in the jaw (TM Joint). Bite or Occlusal adjustments are performed by reshaping the tooth or teeth so they align properly with each other. If the front or anterior teeth are uneven, then this procedure can be performed to improve the esthetics of the smile.
When teeth cannot be saved as a result of tooth decay, fractures, or periodontal disease they need to be extracted. Local anesthetics are used to numb the area, and with the use of forceps the tooth is removed from the socket. This is performed without any pay or discomfort to the patient. These extractions are often carried out in conjunction with Implant placement. Complicated extractions may require the assistance of an Oral Surgeon.
